Free Tax Preparation with VITA In-Person

The SWPL hosts the VITA program each tax is for households who generally make $68,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. Also, individuals who are self-employed should have business expenses less than $35,000 and individuals should not have income from a rental property. 

Looking to have your taxes completed at the SWPL VITA Clinic?   Taxpayers bring their tax documents to have their tax return completed by a certified VITA volunteer. The VITA volunteer prepares the tax return and files it with the taxpayer’s consent. All volunteer preparers are IRS trained, vetted and certified.  

Documents Needed for VITA Tax Preparation:

  1. Photo ID for you and/or spouse if filing jointly
  2. Social Security Cards or ITIN Letters for every member of your family listed on the return (if you do not have a card for every member of your family – you must contact the social security administration to replace card prior to having taxes prepared)
  3. Printed W-2s and/or 1099’s from ALL of your jobs worked in 2024
  4. Health Insurance Documents – If you signed-up for health insurance through the CT Marketplaceyou must bring all tax documents that you receive from the Marketplace (if you received from 1095A it is REQUIRED to complete your tax return)
  5. Unemployment Compensation – Form 1099G
  6. If self-employed, any related business expenses
  7. Interest/Dividend statements from your financial institutions (if applicable)-forms #1099 INT, 1099DIV
  8. Tuition and student loan information (if applicable) form 1098T or 1098E
  9. Documentation from your daycare provider (their SSN or EIN) if you paid for childcare in 2024
  10. If you own a home, your annual mortgage interest statement.
  11. A record of any taxes paid to the town (property taxes, automobile, etc.)
  12. Any other income information or IRS notices that you received
  13. Copy of your last year’s tax return
  14. If you would like to direct deposit, please bring a check from your checking account or the account and routing number for your savings account (NOTE: you can apply for a pre-paid debit card at the tax site if you do not have an existing account.). Those filing for the very first time, will only be able to receive a check from the State of CT
